Some building footprints in SlopeScout may lack addresses due to missing or outdated assessor data, non-building structures, or new developments.
SlopeScout uses building footprint data sourced from public datasets, primarily the Microsoft Building Footprint layer and OpenStreetMap. These datasets, while highly comprehensive, sometimes lack addresses for certain building footprints. Below, we explain the common reasons why some building footprints in SlopeScout do not have associated addresses.
In this article, we will cover:
Common reasons for missing addresses
- Lack of assessor data: In some cases, especially in rural areas, the local assessor data may not include the situs (physical) address. This is common for properties without a designated 911 address, such as barns, sheds, or other outbuildings on large rural parcels.
- Footprints of non-building structures: Many building footprints are generated using AI, which sometimes captures structures that are not traditional buildings. For instance, you may see footprints for items like ticket booths, sheds, or utility buildings that don’t have assigned addresses because they’re located on rights-of-way or in other unique areas.
- Outdated or missing address data: Sometimes, the data sources we use are outdated, or recent updates have not yet been integrated. We continuously seek updated assessor layers that assign addresses to these previously unaddressed structures.
- Footprints of structures in new developments: In new allotments or under-construction areas, footprints are often captured before official addresses are assigned.

Our ongoing effort to update address data
We are actively working to refine our building footprint data:
- We routinely review and validate address data using various sources, including updated assessor information.
- We strive to remove footprints that do not represent real, addressable buildings, such as sheds and other small structures without an associated address.
- In the near future, we plan to use additional machine learning tools, like those from Esri, to enhance the accuracy and currency of our building footprint layer.
